Mobile Crane Rental in Abu Dhabi: Permits and Lead Times

Hiring a mobile crane in Abu Dhabi involves more than picking a tonnage. The crane has to reach the site on roads with restricted hours, larger machines may need a movement permit, and government and infrastructure sites check documents at the gate before anything is allowed to lift. This guide sets out what to plan so the crane arrives on the right day and starts work straight away.
Choose Capacity From the Lift, Not the Label
A crane's headline tonnage is its maximum at a short radius. What matters for your job is how much it can lift at the distance and height you actually need. Before asking for a price, have these ready:
- Weight of the load, including rigging and any lifting frame
- Radius: the horizontal distance from the crane's centre to where the load is picked up and where it is set down
- Height the load has to clear, including obstacles along the way
- Where the crane can stand, and what the ground is like there
A 50-tonne crane working close in can out-lift a 100-tonne crane working at long reach. Our guide to choosing the right crane capacity explains how to read these numbers, and we review the load chart with you before a booking is confirmed. Maxtgc's mobile cranes run from 25 to 500 tonnes.
Plan Around Heavy-Vehicle Restricted Hours
Mobile cranes and the trailers that support them are heavy vehicles, and Abu Dhabi restricts when those can use city roads. At the time of writing, Abu Dhabi Mobility bans freight vehicles, trucks, tankers and heavy equipment from Abu Dhabi city roads:
- Monday to Thursday: 6:30 am to 9:00 am, and 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm
- Friday: 6:30 am to 9:00 am, and 11:00 am to 1:00 pm
These hours are revised from time to time, so check the current schedule before you fix a lift time. In practice it means a crane booked for an 8:00 am start on Abu Dhabi island needs to be on site before the morning window begins, or the lift needs to be planned for later in the morning.
Permits for Larger Cranes and Oversized Loads
Smaller mobile cranes travel as normal heavy vehicles. Larger cranes, and cranes that travel with separate counterweights or boom sections on trailers, can fall into the oversized or abnormal load category, which needs approval for the route before the move. In Abu Dhabi these approvals are handled through the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility).
What this means for your programme:
- The approval is tied to a specific route and load, so the lift details need to be settled first.
- Lead time depends on the size of the move, which is why large lifts are scheduled rather than same-day.
- If the load you are lifting is itself being delivered on a lowbed, that delivery may need its own approval.
Our article on what an oversized-load permit involves in the UAE covers the process in more detail. At Maxtgc the transport and permitting team works alongside every crane booking, so the lift and the journey are planned as one job.
Know What the Site Gate Will Ask For
Government, infrastructure and large commercial sites in Abu Dhabi usually check documents before a crane is allowed in. Commonly requested:
- The crane's current inspection certificate
- The load chart for the configuration being used
- Operator and banksman credentials
- A lift plan or method statement for the lift
Ask your site's safety team what they need when you place the booking, not on the morning of the lift. A crane held at the gate for a missing document costs the same as a crane that is working. Our pre-lift site safety checklist lists what to have in place before the crane arrives.
Sites With Extra Access Rules
Some parts of the capital add their own constraints. Islands such as Reem, Al Maryah, Yas and Saadiyat are reached by bridges, developments often have managed access and set delivery hours, and work near the Corniche or in dense downtown streets can mean limited space to set up outriggers. None of this prevents a lift, but each one affects which crane fits and when it can arrive, so mention the exact location early.
Realistic Lead Times
As a guide for Abu Dhabi:
- Standard lifts with a smaller crane: often the same day
- Larger cranes or lifts needing a movement permit: scheduled around the approval
- Lifts on sites with strict documentation: allow time for the site to review the lift plan
The fastest way to a firm date is a complete enquiry: load weight, radius, height, location and your preferred date.
